Confession of an Adventurous Reader!

I honestly had no idea how adventurous a reader I was until I joined the Carina Press team.

Harlequin’s editorial offerings are satisfying and rewarding, but unbeknownst to me I was in a reading rut. The crux of the problem is that here at Harlequin I’m never short of reading material and the creativity and innovation of our series authors delivers a wide and wonderful variety of plot and storyline. I have my favorite genres and authors and I’m very much within my happy place reading the series and single title books from our publishing program. My tastes run towards romantic suspense, historical and the occasional paranormal but as they, say ignorance is bliss. When I started overhearing conversations from the Carina Press acquisition team about Space Opera, Dystopian, Male/Male and Steampunk Fiction, I started thinking….what on earth? And then I started thinking…how can I get to read some of this?

I asked for some recommendations and started with a few titles, loved them and eventually was asked to join the acquisition team. And although for the most part I still read to my taste, the manuscripts I read these days are often set in alternate universes, featuring hot heroes and heroines battling demons or steam powered automatons in a world threatened by extinction. My three favorite genres in one….Winning!

Some of my more adventurous reads this year include:

Blood of the Maple by Dana Marie Bell

Photographs and Phantoms by Cindy Spencer Pape

Tempting the Enemy by Dee Tenorio

Tangled Past by Leah Braemel

The First Victim by JB Lynn

Have you been adventurous in your reading lately?

A FREE book for every woman!

60th-anniversaryTo thank our many readers for taking us into their hearts and homes for 60 years and making us the world’s leading publisher of romantic fiction, Harlequin is giving every woman in America a free book.

In fact, we’re giving away 16 free Books that readers can download by visiting our special Anniversary Hub at eHarlequin.com and there’s a wide variety of books to choose from:

Some folks in the digital space have been surprised at how innovative and fully engaged we are in this arena (we publish 100% of our frontlist titles as eBooks along with original digital publishing; and then there’s our rocking online community; where we have acquired 54 debut authors via online initiatives. We are also actively engaged with social media tools like Twitter [twitter.com/harlequinbooks], Facebook, Myspace, podcasts and blogs) but then Harlequin has a long standing tradition of always being wherever women are. So I hope you’ll help romance novels become the viral story of the year by downloading and enjoying the books.

Here’s the list of free books available for download:

And we have lots more celebrating planned throughout the year for our 60th anniversary including:

  • The Harlequin Famous Firsts Collection – In March, June and September, look for reissues of some of the very first series books written by current New York Times bestselling writers
  • The Heart of a Woman: Harlequin Cover Art 1949-2009 – We’re sponsoring and exhibition of original cover art at the Openhouse Gallery, May 29 to June 12 in New York City.
  • Series Spotlight – Every month a different series is in the spotlight. Look for diamond-themed miniseries, series stars and more from all the Harlequin and Silhouette lines.

Little did Richard and Mary Bonnycastle know what they were starting 60 years ago when they founded Harlequin, but we’ve been satisfying women’s desire for romance, speaking to their hearts and transporting them beyond themselves ever since.

We hope to spread this joy of reading far and wide – please feel free to contact me if you would like further information.

Happy Reading!
